Love & War: Finding the Marriage You’ve Dreamed of by John & Stasi Eldredge

There’s not an instructional manual on marriage.  There’s not a list of steps on how to become one with another human, on how to love another more than yourself; on being committed for, and beyond, life.  That’s impossible.  But the concepts and discussions in Love & War sure do travel a good bit in that direction.

God gave us our spouse — indeed, marriage as an overall entity — to teach us about his love, about his church.

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”

~Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians (5:25-27)

Is there a more challenging topic on which to write?  The Pace of Life.  Generosity of Spirit.  Prayer.  Sex. Agreements with yourself, each other, and the evil one.  History.  Listening.  Fighting for Each Other.

The Eldredge’s ability to successfully navigate these topics, and many more, makes Love & War a must-read.  The ability to inter-weave these topics within the context of an application to our daily lives sets Love & War apart from similar works on marriage.  This book should be on top of any list of marriage “manuals.”
