Daniel 10: Insight into a great spiritual war

Do you trust only what you can see?  There’s a great spiritual battle raging around us, generally invisible to our eyes and intangible to our hands, but real nonetheless.

The forces of evil are fighting every second of every day to devour us.  But take heart.  Do not be afraid, as we’re so often told in scripture.  The forces of good are fighting to protect and defend our very souls.

The prophet Daniel shares such an insight with us.  Daniel had been fasting for 3 weeks, praying fervently to the Lord alongside a great river, seeking to understand a recent vision.  His prayers were answered.  As his companions flee, Daniel alone witnesses an angel in all of his glory.  “Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.” (Daniel 10:12)

What took the angel so long, we may ask?  It had, after all, been three weeks.  He explains:  “The prince of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.” (Daniel 10:13)

The angel’s visit to Daniel was blocked by the forces of the evil one, forces that evidently surrounded the kingdom of Persia.  Like a spiritual blockade.

The angel called for reinforcements, namely Michael, one of the chief princes.  He broke thru the blockade.  And now he stands, face to face with Daniel along the great river.

There’s a great spiritual battle raging around us.  It’s very real.  Neutrality is not an option.

Realize it.  Pick your side.
